Choosing a non-catchment school

The schools listed are those with catchment areas containing military housing. In Scotland, it is sometimes possible to choose a school outside your catchment area and there are other schools in the area which may be suitable, particularly if you have chosen not to live in quarters. Midlothian council

Glencorse Barracks and Service Family Accommodation fall within the jurisdiction of Midlothian Council.

Midlothian catchment area map.

Midlothian is divided into catchment areas.  Every house is in a catchment area, where residents are given priority admission.

Each catchment area has:

  • a non-denominational primary school
  • a non-denominational secondary school
  • a Roman Catholic primary school
  • a Roman Catholic secondary school

Please note that your catchment school may not be the nearest school to your home.

Parents are able to choose which school they would like to send their child to. If you would like to apply for your child to be placed in a school outside your catchment area you need to make a placing request. The Council will try to accommodate your wishes if possible.

Process for registering a child from an Armed Forces family

Military families should contact the school directly to register their children as a pupil. We prefer it if you do this in writing (by email is fine). The Headteacher will then check the roll/class composition and establish if there is a place available.

We would encourage all parents/ carers within the Armed Forces (Regular, Reserve and Veterans) to ensure that the Headteacher of their child’s school is aware of their service status so that the school is able to work in partnership to provide informed support if and when it is needed.

If you are applying for a place in a school outside the catchment area please let the Head Teacher know this when you contact them.

Additional support needs

Please also make us aware at the earliest opportunity if your child is currently provided with additional learning support or is in a special school.

The system of support for children with Additional Support Needs is different in Scotland and your child will need to be assessed when they arrive in order to ascertain what support he/she requires. Please be reassured that the Council wants your child to get the best they can out of their time in Scotland and we will give you all the support we are able to.

Children and young people from Armed Forces families often experience numerous changes in their lives which means that they may need additional support – albeit for a short time – to help them cope with the effects of these changes. Support provided by the school might relate to:

  • Mobility
  • Deployment
  • Periods of separation due to training, deployment, posting, assignment
  • Interrupted learning due to mobility
  • Moving from one school to another at times throughout the year
  • Increased levels of anxiety or worry
  • Adjusting to a new school community
  • Leaving friends and peer groups
  • Making new friends
  • Learning new educational systems, the language and setting.
