Identity, Purpose and Belonging: International conference on Forces research

The words 'Identity, Prupose and belonging' float above an auditorium crowd all looking to the stage.

Delegates worldwide are attending Scotland’s first international conference on Armed Forces research in society.

‘Identity, Purpose and Belonging: The First Scottish International Conference on Armed Forces in Society’, is taking place at Edinburgh Napier University’s Craiglockhart Campus until Wednesday 28 August.

Hosted by the University’s Centre for Military Research, Education and Public Engagement, in collaboration with the Scottish Armed Forces Evidence Research Hub, the event is designed to allow delegates to engage with international and UK-based researchers and practitioners.

Packed programme

On Monday 26 August, the programme focuses on the Armed Forces Covenant and transition, with talks on the history of the Covenant, the fund, AI and the future of cybersecurity, as well as a presentation and demonstration of future applications of social robots for Veteran healthcare.

Forces Children’s Education Carolyn MacLeod MBE will attend the conference on Tuesday 27 August, with the day’s discussions on Armed Forces family and child, transition, employment and lifelong learning. This will include a talk on understanding the needs of service children in a primary school setting from the teacher’s perspective and a session on how to transition Military expertise into civilian work.

Delegates will also hear from Graham Short MBE on the Armed Forces child. Graham was a co-author with Carolyn on the Rallying to the Flag: A Consolidated Picture of Armed Forces Children’s Education in Scotland in 2021: Laying Foundations & Promoting Development report. That research was a collaboration between the Association of Directors of Education in Scotland (ADES) and the Centre of Military Research, Education and Public Engagement with Edinburgh Napier University.

The conference’s final day, Wednesday 28 August, will focus on health, mental health and wellbeing. This will include talks on blast injury, rehabilitation and Veteran welfare, reducing and preventing Veteran suicide, and advances in treatment and personalised care.
